Europe, 1848: three imperial dynasties rule over territories stretching from Germany south to the Adriatic Sea and east to the Bering Strait on the Pacific Coast. The Houses of Hapbburg, Hohenzollern, and Romanov ruled over lands more vast than the British Empire at its greatest extent. In their struggle for continental domination and for eternal guarantees for their rule by divine right, they nurture the weeds of reaction that are destined to choke European democracy and become part of the conflagration of 1914. World-renowned diplomatic correspondent and historial C. L. Sulzberger traces the rise and fall of the three dynasties from their emergence as feudal princelings to their coronation as absolute imperial lords, wielding vain, often foolish, often cruel, reactionary sovereignty over a degraded peasant population. THE FALL OF EAGLES captures the Gotterdammerung of European imperial power and, while dramatizing the human spectacle of its dynasts, provides a sharp and profound understanding of the causes that led to the awesome tragedy of World War I.
Revisionist history at it's best!!

This is one of the most amusing books I have read about fallen European dynasties. Extremely biased, but makes up for inacurracy with humor to spare. Not for serious academic research, but very entertaining. I highly recomend it for anyone who knows their history, and is looking for a few good laughs!
