An all-expense-paid vacation to a sun-drenched paradise is shared by a group who all have had bloody nightmares all their lives, and the initial fun is soon replaced by forbidden urges, human... This description may be from another edition of this product.
I guess I first read this book in 1989 or so. I loaned my copy to someone who loaned it to someone else ... I had to buy another. I can't believe I haven't reviewed it until now! The book is a modern retelling of Aztec mythology, and it begins (more or less) in New York City. It moves location and becomes a bit surreal. The novel skillfully blends violence, religion and sex to create a wonderful escape. The book is long, but it is coherent. Yes, there are a couple of "huh?" spots, but as a rule, this is a solid, comprehensible read that won't leave you hanging or muttering there should have been more. It is internally consistant, the writing style brings you right in, and the characters are fairly believable. I am frustrated that there was so little background on some of the characters. I would have been fascinated to know their stories as well as we get to know some of the other characters. But even with this, I find this a great read (and re-read). You will probably wind up searaching for the myths at the library or on the 'net. You will count the days until 2012, when the calendar ends. If you've read Dark Winds, you'll find that Tetzcatlipoca's role (and Maria's) are a bit different in this book. If you haven't read Dark Winds, don't sweat it. This isn't part 2 of anything. This is a self-contained, detailed gem.

I like reading book by someone who is knowledgable- this you can know by reading the book!. This is one such author and the book is PURE rollercoster ride in horror. Unfortunatley this auther is not popular. Read this and Dark winds- his first book and good to read before this - not sequel and all but, well you will know what I mean when u read it!. Another underrated good horror auther to try is Allen Lee harris - two books 'deliver us from devil' and 'let there be dark'.- as good as peter straub.
