Sparrow was born in a world built on steam power, gears, and clockwork; ravaged by disease. Atramortis, or Black Death, is a deadly disease that kills the nerves and blackens the skin. When Sparrow was infected at birth, he was given a few months to live. After amputating his arm in an attempt to stop the spread, his shoulder continued to blacken and die. At this, his father left and never came back. But on his seventh birthday, the disease stopped spreading. The source of his survival unknown, he is seen both as a beacon of hope, and a symbol of hatred and jealousy. Just before his seventeenth birthday, he leaves his home to become a Ranger, an elite soldier trained to fly airships and fight the Nox Ventus, sky pirates who kill and steal for selfish gain. But as he learns more about the world around him, the truth of good an evil comes to light, and Sparrow may become a cog in the massive machine of change on the horizon.
