The Forest Laird, A Tale of William Wallace By Jack Whyte The Forest Laird, is Jack Whyte’s first of three books in The Guardian series. This Tale of William Wallace is based on Scottish and English recorded history, the musings of Blind Harry (Wallace’s official biographer), and is woven throughout with various myths and legends of Scotland’s famous late Thirteenth Century freedom fighter. The works of several 21st Century researchers have also been referenced. Blended into the saga of medieval history’s last 300 years, Whyte has skillfully enlightened the reader on Church, political, social and economic happenings during the time of Scotland’s initial War for Independence from England. This encompasses correspondence with France in petition of their help against English domination. With the emergence of the burgesses, a fourth estate had joined the Bishops, the earls of the ancient Celtic kingdom and the barons. This imbued the people of Scotland with newfound dignity. The war itself joined the north and south with a common language which, combined with a new feeling of community, resulted in united revolution against English invasion, occupation and crippling taxes. Facts are enhanced with much of the myths and stories that have made William Wallace a Scottish hero and a legend world-wide. Whyte’s book begins with Wallace’s betrayal, mock trail, false conviction and death. It concludes, however, on a note of triumph as the freedom fighter leads his men in readiness for the Battle of Stirling Bridge.
