AN INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER Featured in Entertainment Weekly, People, The Millions, and USA TODAY "An unforgettable and resplendent novel which will take its place among the great historical fiction written about World War II." --Adriana Trigiani, bestselling author of The Shoemaker's Wife A young girl flees Nazi-occupied Germany with her family and best friend, only to discover that the overseas refuge they had been promised is an illusion in this "engrossing and heartbreaking" (Library Journal, starred review) debut novel, perfect for fans of The Nightingale, Lilac Girls, and The Tattooist of Auschwitz. Berlin, 1939. Before everything changed, Hannah Rosenthal lived a charmed life. But now the streets of Berlin are draped in ominous flags; her family's fine possessions are hauled away; and they are no longer welcome in the places they once considered home. A glimmer of hope appears in the shape of the St. Louis, a transatlantic ocean liner promising Jews safe passage to Cuba. At first, the liner feels like a luxury, but as they travel, the circumstances of war change, and the ship that was to be their salvation seems likely to become their doom. New York, 2014. On her twelfth birthday, Anna Rosen receives a mysterious package from an unknown relative in Cuba, her great-aunt Hannah. Its contents inspire Anna and her mother to travel to Havana to learn the truth about their family's mysterious and tragic past. Weaving dual time frames, and based on a true story, The German Girl is a beautifully written and deeply poignant story about generations of exiles seeking a place to call home.
Absolutely Stunning Story. You will be Captured from the very First line ! The Very First Twelve Words !!! A very Powerful, and heartbreaking story, bringing past and present together. It was a very emotional read, the further you went into the story, the tragedy that happened to all the passengers Aboard the St.Louis...was disgraceful. This story enlightens you to actual facts ...to the real lives that were affected aboard that boat! This is not made up..but fully documented truth...told through the eyes of a little girl Hannah and what happened to her family and the little boy that was her best friend in life. A very Captivating and emotional story of heartbreaking wartime experiences, how Hannah's mom and Dad the Rosenthal's try to carry on with Dignity and Grace. The Ship that was to be this Familys.. and over 900 other familys salivation from a Country that didn't want them...Were suddenly denied entry...while out in the ocean....this was to be their doom in the end. I have Nothing but Praise for this Author and this Story, that is so Beautifully Written, not in a political boring way..but of a gut wrenching experience of how Hannah and her Mom who were hand picked to disembark in Cuba..with a very small handful of others, went on to live their lives ...with out her Dad, who eventually died in Auschwitz. This story Shows the Black Mark on the Countries that Refused these passengers Life....a chance to Live.....The United States, Canada, and Cuba.. Denied them entry..knowing what was happening to the Jewish population in Europe. Great Britain did take in a little over 200...and the other European countries that took the rest..were all invaded by Hitler...and they eventually faced death... Exiles that were seeking safety and a place to call home. So sad that this is not taught somewhere throughout our school years...I think it's a story everyone should know. Everyone of their lives was in Mortal Danger ...from that madman Hitler...and Our Country Refused them safety and salvation. It was quite the eye opener ....this was a piece of History of our Country I never knew, and here we are...Generations later...still having battles over refugees seeking a place to call home. Though they are not fleeing a "Hitler"madman... who knows what situations these people face day in and day out. Highly recommend this poignant story of the human spirit. If I could ..it would be 10 stars ...excellent read...a lesson in History..that reads as a loving, heartful story personal story...right up to the 9/11 attacks !!! Excellent for anyone who Loves Historical world war ll Stories.
