By the Winner of the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Children's Literature Albert the glassblower and Sofia are the loving parents of little Klas and Klara. Albert makes the most beautiful glass bowls and vases (unfortunately they are so impractical that no one will buy them), while Sofia supports the family by working in the fields. Every year Albert goes to the fair to try to sell his wares, and sometimes Sofia and the children go too. At the fair the family meets Flutter Mildweather, a weaver of magical rugs that foretell the future, and Klas and Klara come the attention of the splendid Lord and Lady of All Wishes Town, who have everything they want except for one: children. Full of curious and vivid characters--like the one-eyed raven Wise Wit, who can only see the bright side of life, and the monstrous governess Nana, whose piercing song can shatter glass--The Glassblower's Children also ponders such serious matters as what it means to find meaningful work and the difference between what you want and what you need. In The Glassblower's Children Maria Gripe has drawn on fairy tales and Norse myths to tell a thrilling story with a very modern sensibility.
I received this as a gift from a cousin when I was child. When I got to read it, it transported me to a fascinating fairyland ever so beautiful and yet so threatening. I loved everything about it, about how good triumph over evil, and about what are the truly important things in life. I also loved the engravings by the author's husband. I lost the book when I moved, and was dismayed when I could no longer get it from the market. Guess what, a good friend found a copy sold as a collector's item and gave it to me. I'm so glad to re-read it after so many years. PS. the author passed away in 2007, aged 84.

This book was my favorite story when I was a kid. It was the first chapter book I really enjoyed. It has mistery, magic, love, and complex, deep characters that could have been used for many other stories. An absolute delight.

Read the real fairy tales to your children. Don't worry, as long as you are with them they won't be frightened. This story has beautiful imagery and represents the life long bond a child has with their parent, no matter what happens. It is wonderful!
