I never read Gordon's first book, but read this one on a long rainy day and couldn't put it down. I absolutely loved it, and am thoroughly enjoying The Company You Keep as well. What an engaging, interesting writer.
A very interesting page turner

Not fully understanding the American Judicial system, this was a little hard to grasp at first. However, the book really had quite a few good characters, and some interesting plots and sub plots. A definate 5 stars, especially if you understand how the US DOJ is put together.
Best novel I have read in years.

I'm a confessed espionage junkie having read nearly everything by John Le Carre, Len Deighton and Bill Granger. I am always on the look out for fresh new books. Gordon's "The Gunrunner's Daughter" ranks with any of the above mentioned authors. Gordon's heady mix of fact and fiction keeps the reader thinking and turning pages as this "covert action of the soul" unfolds. By the last page, the feeling is, this is the way the world works. And it's not a comforting feeling.
Intl. Thriller Enriched by Moral Ambiguity/Complexity
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 26 years ago
thriller w twisting complex plot, international arms trade expertly researched & described, moral ambiguities & complexities of jews in america bound to israel yet repulsed by some of what it does. but best of all, allison/esther rosenthal, a heroine whose depth and motives are so deep and understated by author that book bears a second reading. she's definitely larger than life, but allows gordon to explore so much that really matters. complete with tiny walk-ons by Steve Post and Ronald Dworkin; if you know who they are, you'll appreciate Gordon's sensibility. I look forward to him turning his attention again to the ever growing confusion of the middle east === he's now shown that he is more than a one-book phenom; he can actually tell a tale set in our confused post-cold war world without resorting to one-dimensional terrorists and hi-tech toys.
A page-turner,that keeps you on your toes

A thiller that challenges you on an intellectual level, at the same time, Gordon swiftly fleshes out his characters, and engages you in situations which if not historical, are darn close. Suspense, intrigue, romance, international locales, with an eye, ear and nose that makes the reader almost there in the restaurant in Florence. With the Biblical heroine Esther as motif, Gordon brings the characters in this story of modern day international intrigue through challenges to loyalty, love, honor and friendship, and keeps them human. Attention to details crafts this into on believable, enjoyable read, to be savored more than once.
