Fifteen-year-old Olivia and her family recently moved from Connecticut into a home next to an abandoned Lunatic Asylum in Port Johnson Ohio. On the first night in her new home and from her bedroom window Olivia spots a small girl in the attic window of the asylum. Using her finger, the girl appears to trace a message on the window of the asylum attic and then runs away when a dark figure comes into the room. The sight of the girl in the window and the menacing shadow in the attic room, horrifies Olivia. She decides along with her twelve-year-old sister Sofia and the fifteen-year-old son of the Asylum caretaker Logan to try to solve the mystery of the girl in the window. Together they explore the asylum including the off-limit basement where misguided doctors once performed lobotomies and electro-shock therapies. The trio seeks answers to the mysteries of the asylum, why are the grave markers in the enormous asylum cemetery all numbered without names? What is in the gravestone labeled Specimen? The three teens are desperate to solve Maggie's death and in doing so stir up enemies both living and dead.
