The entire book provides basic and unadorned info about Hitler, his rise to power, his supporters, his detractors. The "secrets and lies" part of the title refers to the mostly clandestine but determined conspiratorial attempts to stand against the Nazis by various organizations and groups---intellectuals and bourgeoise alike, religious institutions, elements of the military, even Hitler Youth. Welch asserts that no one of these could have taken the Nazis down on uts own, particularly as Hitler's seemingly unstoppable success swelled the vast majority of the citizenry with fanatical pride in his accomplishments for their Fatherland.Only the military might have had a chance, but their every serious attempt met with disaster. And in the end, even the Allies engaged in their own conspiracies by retaining elements of the Reich---research, weapons, even scientists like Werner von Braun---which could best serve their own needs.Though volumes have been written on just one of the many topics touched upon in this book, it is a great little timeline and overall summary from the Putsch to the fall. Lots of interesting pictures as well to accompany the text. Well worth the read.
