The Hockey Player is a novel about a young man in love with the world's fastest game: hockey. Daniel La Pointe is a talented player, the scoring star on his Junior A team, but after he loses his parents in a tragic accident he takes out his anger on the ice and at school. His elderly aunt and uncle try to contain his outbursts but after Daniel gets into one more fight, this time with his own team mate, his coach throws him off the team. His guardians also lose their patience and send him to Connecticut to be under the iron hand of his uncle, an ex-army major, to see if he can save himself. He leaves his beloved Quebec to struggle with the strange Anglo culture he encounters in a New England high school where no one speaks French but he meets this girl, the athletic and blond manager of the high school hockey team, who cajoles him into trying out for the team. He tries not to get pulled back into the game but when he reluctantly makes the team, switching to his left hand and playing on rusty skates, he begins to pull the rag tag team together and gets them headed for the playoffs. But along the way this girl learns the secret of who is and where he has come from. The Hockey Player is a book as fast as the game of hockey itself and will be a great read for young and old hockey fans alike.
