The International Study of Written Composition II explores many aspects of the writing conventions used by national and regional communities and the community of school writing and teachers as it intersects with the other communities that students inhabit. The study begins from the premise that the school subject writing is unique in that it represents a culturally-determined system in which a common set of practices are used by teachers, students and society. Individual chapters take up the nature of the beliefs and conventions of the school writing community as they are expressed in general curricular statements, in the beliefs and practices of teachers, the perceptions of students, the resultant performance of students, and the scoring practices of the IEA raters.
