This was my favorite Walter Farley book, and I read them all. I did not know that I would like science fiction, but after I read the book, I was an sf fan. The idea that there could be colors I'd never seen before fed my imagination. To parents of girls: I didn't care that Walter Farley's protagonists were usually boys. The sense of dizzying joy when riding a horse is apparently universal!

I read this book not too long ago. I had not heard about the book before hand and did not read the summary of it on the back cover, so I had no idea what to expect from it. What I got was something completely unexpected. I thought I was going to hear about Steve Duncan taking Flame from the island to race but in a similar format as in the first novel, The Black Stallion. When the extra-terrestrials showed up I was happily surprised. This is the only novel in which Farley ventures into the world of science fiction. I think he did a marvelous job with it although I do agree with the other reviewer that it is somewhat difficult to understand and may not be and easy read for younger children like many of the other books in the series have turned out to be.

I dont care what anyone says, this was a great book. I mean, come on people, have an imagination! I liked how the "aliens" helped Steve, and they werent wanting to take his horse or something like other weird books. It was really good, it started out boring but got wayyyy better. A MUST for those who truly love horses.
Rare title is definitely worth a read!

If you love The Black Stallion books by Walter Farley, you should take a look at his "Island Stallion" books. This title "The Island Stallion Races", is about Steve Duncan, with the aid of two humanoid aliens, racing Flame! Flame is a herd stallion, as wild as the come! Will Steve be able to control him on a track with other stallions? Can Flame prove his speed to the world? Also, who are these aliens? This book was an exciting and adventrous read for kids and adults alike! Hard to find, but worth it!
