Book Overview

Do you ever find yourself losing sight of the important things in life-work and stress can become overwhelming at times. Such is the situation where CEO Roger Kimbrough finds himself in this business parable.

The Janitor was inspired by Todd Hopkins's personal experiences of interviewing overqualified retired businessmen for evening shift janitorial positions. Todd's applicants consistently would say they simply needed something to do. In this fable, janitor Bob Tidwell helps Roger to reevaluate how he is leading his business and his life. Bob's counsel is based upon six principles that Todd and coauthor Ray Hilbert discovered have the most impact on succeeding in business while holding together a personal life. Their insightful advice is delivered in a real-to-life story that inspires you to find greater fulfillment in your life.

Like so many CEOs in the corner office, still working when the janitor arrives to do the nightly cleaning, Roger is having a difficult and stressful evening when he spills his guts to the older janitor. As their relationship develops, Bob, a retired businessman, promises help that will turn Roger's business and personal life around. The story follows not only their weekly meetings at the office but also the application of each principle:

The Janitor's message will capture your mind and heart; stimulate meaningful, lasting life-changes; and show you how to influence your family, neighbors, and coworkers while experiencing business and life to the fullest.

"Take a few minutes and devour this little book by Todd Hopkins and Ray Hilbert. It's going to be a motivational classic, and you'll be in on the first wave of inspired readers." - Pat Williams, Senior Vice President, Orlando Magic; and Author, The Warrior Within

A Janitoral Review

Easy to read and hard to stop without finishing. Provides usable guide on how to be more productive in business and to have a happier and fuller life.

A modern day classic on how to build a better life.

My international consulting work brings me into direct contact with thousands of desparately out-of-balance men and women. If my clients simply integrated the six directives in this powerful book, I'd be out of work! Read and apply these directives - it will change your life for the better.

The Business of Life

I've had the pleasure of reading The Janitor. I've also had the pleasure of "living" The Janitor. After reading this book, I have rearranged the things in my life that are most important. I apply the six directives daily and have imparted this wisdom to others! My life at home is happier and my work in business more satisfying. YOU MUST BUY THIS BOOK, READ IT, AND TAKE THE DIRECTIVES TO HEART.

Great Read!

I read this book at the urging of a friend and found myself pulled into the story right away. I couldn't put the book down until I found out what the next directive was. It serves as a powerful reminder of what is truly important to us in the big picture. I would recommend it to everyone since the lessons can be incorporated into the everyday lives of people from all walks of life - not just a CEO!

A better life is only 2 hours away!

I love to read non-fiction and really enjoy meaningful, well written publications that can actually help me as I press forward in the day-to-day steps of my life. Hopkins and Hilbert have really hit the nail on the head with "The Janitor." It is very well written, holds your attention and provides well defined, easy to remember steps to improving your life. I often muse that Jim Collins, "Good To Great" (another must read) is really a book about life, not business, but it is sold as a business book. Similarly, "The Janitor" is about life and not just about the simple steps to improving your business (bla, bla). In it (The Janitor), Hopkins and Hilbert have created a story where a corporate CEO builds a relationship with a janitor while working late and begins to learn 6 key steps that, when implemented, have a radical and positive shift in the life results for the executive both at work and at home. I think the story means a lot to me personally because I can so closely relate to the struggles of the executive and also have seen the impact of the implementation of these 6 simple steps - that ultimately lead us to living the life we dream of instead of what the driving force within our culture creates for us.
