Book Overview

New York Times bestselling author Amy Ewing delivers a dark and riveting tale that "will have fans of Oliver's Delirium, Cass's The Selection, and DeStefano's Wither breathless."*

The Jewel has many meanings: wealth, beauty, royalty. But for Violet, the Jewel has always meant servitude.

Born and raised in the Marsh, Violet is destined for the Jewel. She is trained as a surrogate for the elite and is bought by the Duchess of the Lake at auction. And she quickly learns that beneath the Jewel's glittering fa?ade lies the cruelty, backstabbing, and hidden violence that have become the royal way of life.

Violet must accept the ugly realities of her life...all while fighting for her survival. But before she can accept her fate, Violet meets a handsome boy who is also under the Duchess's control. A forbidden love sparks.

But their illicit affair has consequences, which will cost them both more than they bargained for. And toeing the line between being calculating and rebellious, Violet must decide what, and who, she is willing to risk for her own freedom.

YA content with Elementary aged writing

The content within this trilogy is definitely on the YA side, but the writing style of the author heavily leans towards elementary aged style (short sentences, very few complex words or sentences longer than ~10 words). If you/your kid isn't a super strong reader but want the "older" content, this would be a good fit. Nonetheless, I enjoyed reading it, but did find it hard to get through the third book.

Similar style to the Selection series.

I really enjoyed the book once I got through the beginning and started to understand it! I was a little confused on the facts if the book, but after time it started to make sense. Really good characters and plot! It does leave you on a cliff hanger though, so have the next book ordered!

Pretty good

I saw this as a book to read if you liked the selection. In many regards, it did remind me of the Selection by Kiera Cass. I would recommend this if you liked that series. I still have to read the last 2 books in the series.

This was the best series I've ever read! It is similar to hunger games but in more of a fantasy setting. Being able to follow Violet through her journey as she faces this new world she is a part of is the most amazing experience! Perfect mix of action, mystery, fantasy, and romance! Ten out of ten, must recommend!
