The Journey Home follows Cowrie through her passions for life, love, food and challenge. Peopled by a diverse array of characters: Benny the outrageous film-maker, Peta who Cowrie falls in love with and the student DK who has a few things to learn. Torn between her newly made friendships in California and her roots in her homeland, Cowrie discovers that there is a price to pay for exile, even when it's voluntary.
Just finished 'Journey Home' - the second time that I have read it in the last 12 months. It is fresh, vibrant and beautiful! It gives a totally different insight into Maori and Hawaiian culture. I understand that it is 'just' a novel, but it didn't feel like that - it was direct communication from the main character - Cowrie. The main push of the book is recognition of and acceptance of racial differences - that moved me beyong comfort. The strong lesbian content may be offensive to some - I am hetero, and I simply found it meaningful to the book and erotic in itself. The characters are real, tangible and I would love to meet them! :-)))
