A delightful new western romance andNew York Times bestseller from the author ofRedeeming Love.
New York Times bestselling author Francine Rivers returns to the California frontier in this sweeping, romantic tale of a displaced New England suffragette, a former Union soldier disinherited by his Southern family, and the town they join forces to save.
1875. When Kathryn Walsh arrives in tiny Calvada, a mining town nestled in the Sierra Nevadas, falling in love is the farthest thing from her mind. Banished from Boston by her wealthy stepfather, she has come to claim an inheritance from the uncle she never knew: a defunct newspaper office on a main street overflowing with brothels and saloons, and a seemingly worthless mine. Moved by the oppression of the local miners and their families, Kathryn decides to relaunch her uncle's newspaper―and then finds herself in the middle of a maelstrom, pitted against Calvada's most powerful men. But Kathryn intends to continue to say―and publish―whatever she pleases, especially when she knows she's right.
Matthias Beck, owner of a local saloon and hotel, has a special interest in the new lady in town. He instantly recognizes C. T. Walsh's same tenacity in the beautiful and outspoken redhead―and knows all too well how dangerous that family trait can be. While Kathryn may be right about Calvada's problems, her righteousness could also get her killed. But when the handsome hotelier keeps finding himself on the same side of the issues as the opinionated Miss Walsh, Matthias's restless search for purpose becomes all about answering the call of his heart.
Everyone may be looking to strike it rich in this lawless boomtown, but it's a love more precious than gold that will ultimately save them all.
Engrossing plot that's perfect for fans of Christian romanceWestern historical fiction set during the Gold RushInterwoven with themes of compassion and redemption
I truly have never read a book where I grew more and more frustrated with every page. I did enjoy the setting, the writing style, and themes; it’s a well-written story. However, the romance was not cutting it.
The main character is a fiery, strong-willed woman with lots of depth and growth, and I greatly loved getting to know her. She is easy to root for throughout the book. But the main love interest is a rude, incorrigible bully who does not respect her opinions or boundaries. He kisses her without permission, doesn’t leave her alone when she tells him to, and he uses her physical attraction to him against her. She is constantly saying how she never wants to marry, and he publicly backs her into a corner until she agrees to marrying him. No one stands up for her, not even the other women, and it’s all fine cuz he’s handsome! I felt uncomfortable and angry every time he spoke to her.
If the story focused more on Kathryn becoming an independent business owner and not her love life, it would’ve been a more compelling story. Or just make the love interest kind to her! It felt to me like the author tried to create a Darcy character but with Christian Gray tendencies. It was not an enjoyable mix.
Nonetheless, I was disappointed, especially when her other books were suggested so highly to me.

THE LADY'S MINE
by Francine Rivers
I devoured this book! The characters were charming. Kathryn was my favorite character because she was so strong and knew what she wanted and didn't want from life. The story was engaging.
I will definitely recommend #theladysmine to my friends. I look forward to reading more books from this author because I enjoy her writing style.
