In California, Frank Morgan nearly fond a home. But now he's pulled up stakes and hit the road again, aiming to reach the high desert of Arizona. For Frank, the plan changes when he steps into a saloon in a dusty boom town called Los Angeles. That's where he learns that his nemesis, Val Dooley, has found anew business: the selling of young women into prostitution, with the victims as young as 12 years old, and the survivors ending up drugged and beaten. Frank wastes no time in tracking his enemy, travelling from California to New Mexico and West Texas. What he doesn't know is that Val Dooley has been waiting for him all along: for one last chance to bring the last gunfighter down - in a hail of lead.
This is the 7th in the Gunfighter series, which follows Frank Morgan in his quest for a peaceful retirement which continues to elude him. In this story, he is in California, where he initially is mistaken for another man, a notorious outlaw. That man, Val Dooley, was the basis for the previous story, Imposter. I have been hooked on Johnstone's writing since first encountering the series, which follows the man known as The Drifter in a years-long series of encounters of bad people all over the west. I have written to Mr. Johnstone, telling him that never since all the Louis L'Amour books have I been so taken with a series of tales. I told him that his writing style is different from L'Amour's, but at the same time is equally thrilling. It has been a long time since I have had to struggle to put a book down, and this one finishes the Gunfighter series so far as I can determine. But, I hope that is not the case. I am ready to read more stories of Frank Morgan, and hope one day he is allowed to find peace and settle down with a good woman. I highly recommend the series and intend to start reading other of Mr. Johnstone's works. Douglas G. Thomas Rio Rancho, NM (505)896-0479
