"Jesus wrote no autobiography. He left nothing in writing at all. He committed himself and his teaching simply to the hearts and memories of the men who knew and loved him. And they did not fail him. The four little books that we call Gospels are our primary and practically our only sources of information about the life and the words that have changed the world. We may wish the story had been told with greater fullness and detail; but we know that, short as it is, it is enough. It has given Christ to every race and age." (excerpt from Chapter 1: The Making of the Gospels)
Its hard to find a good introduction to the life and teachings of Jesus and this book fills that gap. Stewart's book is dated (both in style and scholarship), but still very helpful. In brief, accessible chapters, he is able to convey a lot of content in a manner that is devotional as well as informational. I use this in a class setting and inevitably, people will report that he helped answer questions they have had and put together things they hadn't noticed before. Maybe someday someone will write a better book that covers the same material and serves the same purpose, but until then, this is still a good introduction.

I was looking for a text that could be used in a classroom. This text would need to be high school level reading. This text was more than suffieient for my use. I am very impressed with it. The next time I need to search for text or reference text you will certainly be first. Dr. J Fenner, Phd
Scholarly but very readable

James S. Stewart has taken the life of Christ and not only presents Him as a child, in His ministry, His miracles and works, but also answers questions. Questions concerning pain, forgiveness, the law and love. He also helps the reader see how sin is truly hurting love. I found this book well documented and an excellent book for those desiring to learn more about Jesus as God and man. Superb for Sunday school techers and those seeking to know more about Christianity.
