"A classic that we will read for years to come." --Jenna Bush Hager, Read with Jenna book club

"Fantastic. Set in 1954, Towles uses the story of two brothers to show that our personal journeys are never as linear or predictable as we might hope." --Bill Gates

"A real joyride . . . elegantly constructed and compulsively readable." --NPR

The bestselling author of A Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility and master of absorbing, sophisticated fiction returns with a stylish and propulsive novel set in 1950s America

In June, 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served fifteen months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett's intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden's car. Together, they have hatched an altogether different plan for Emmett's future, one that will take them all on a fateful journey in the opposite direction--to the City of New York.

Spanning just ten days and told from multiple points of view, Towles's third novel will satisfy fans of his multi-layered literary styling while providing them an array of new and richly imagined settings, characters, and themes. "Once again, I was wowed by Towles's writing--especially because The Lincoln Highway is so different from A Gentleman in Moscow in terms of setting, plot, and themes. Towles is not a one-trick pony. Like all the best storytellers, he has range. He takes inspiration from famous hero's journeys, including The Iliad, The Odyssey, Hamlet, Huckleberry Finn, and Of Mice and Men. He seems to be saying that our personal journeys are never as linear or predictable as an interstate highway. But, he suggests, when something (or someone) tries to steer us off course, it is possible to take the wheel." - Bill Gates

A Profound Journey of Self-Reflection

The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles captivates us with its engrossing story and takes us on a profound journey of self-reflection. It invites us into a world brimming with enchanting characters and unexpected detours as we accompany two brothers on their quest to find their mother in San Francisco, a destination they never quite reach. Through the power of a first-person narrative, we witness the unfolding of events as each character experiences them. Such a multi-dimensional approach prompts us to contemplate the nature of perception, the mysterious interconnectedness of our lives, and the profound impact our choices may have on our journeys. The Lincoln Highway is a novel that achieves everything literature should: it captivates the reader while challenging their beliefs and expanding their empathy. Its narrative mastery is matched only by the diverse perspectives it braids together, urging us to pause and acknowledge the profound impact of our ignorance concerning other people's journeys. By doing so, we gain a deeper appreciation for their experiences, which can fundamentally change how we respond in a given moment.

Best book of the year

This has been my favorite of the author Amor Towles . His writing style has such poetic rhythm & artistry that captures dynamic descriptions & character developments. This book packs a lot of different themes including redemption, vengeance, emancipation as well as a morality play of sorts. I enjoyed learning the history regarding the Lincoln highway & researched it for additional info. This magical read will transport you on a lively, unexpected journey with twists, turns & a thrilling conclusion. A terrific book club selection & sure to delight everyone in your group including those querulous ones! It’s that good. As others said, it was hard to put down once I got started into the flow of the narration.

Couldn't put this book down!!

As a previous reviewer had stated, I read the "Gentleman in Moscow" and absolutely loved it. The Lincoln Highway is a wonderful adventure with amazing characters, masterly written. And, again, just like that previous reviewer, I can't wait for Mr. Towles next masterpiece!!

Don’t Miss Him

Amor Towles is an amazing writer. Beautiful language and incredible character development. Fell hard for A Gentlemen in Moscow and Lincoln Highway is breathtaking in a different way. Will be eagerly awaiting his next book.

Well worth reading

Great read. Characters are so believable. Story didn't go where I thought it would but it was a great adventure. Loved it.

Modern Steinbeck

In my humble opinion, Towles is a modern Steinbeck. This story will be one that remains alive in my mind forever. Billy Watson - you’re my hero.
