For fans of All the Light We Cannot See and The Tattooist of Auschwitz

Inspired by a real-life female spy, a novel about a woman challenging convention and boundaries to help win a war, no matter the cost.

"A gripping, fascinating read." --Kelly Rimmer, New York Times bestselling author of The Warsaw Orphan

1944, Rome. Newlywed Niki Novotn is recruited by a new American spy agency to establish a secret branch in Italy's capital. One of the OSS's few female operatives abroad and multilingual, she's tasked with crafting fake stories and distributing propaganda to lower the morale of enemy soldiers.

Despite limited resources, Niki and a scrappy team of artists, forgers and others--now nicknamed The Lipstick Bureau--find success, forming a bond amid the cobblestoned streets and storied villas of the newly liberated city. But her work is also a way to escape devastating truths about the family she left behind in Czechoslovakia and a future with her controlling American husband.

As the war drags on and the pressure intensifies, Niki begins to question the rules she's been instructed to follow, and a colleague unexpectedly captures her heart. But one step out of line, one mistake, could mean life or death...

Don't miss Michelle Gable's stylish new novel, The Beautiful People, set among Palm Beach's dazzling inner circle in the sunny 1960s.

Italy during world war ll

Ok..to start with...I have read other books by this author..and loved them...5 star review...all the way ! This...I don't know....it kinda disappointed me...during the first half of the book. I found it to be alittle repetitive on the same subject. When the group first got to Italy...they were in charge of creating fake stories and propaganda to spread among the enemy soldiers to lower their morale..as it was waning anyway..being that the Allies stepped in to help put an end to the war and Hilter. The story was created off a Real OSS operative...Barbara Lauwers. The beginning is about the struggles of their small group setting up shop in broken down, war torn Italy. Scattered use of Electricity...accomandations that were the pits ...and basically learning the background of the different men she worked with...and their personalities. Which I understand is an important setup to the rest of what happens in the story...but I felt it was alittle of to much the same ..in a few of the chapters. BUT...I stuck it out...and so GLAD I did !! It all came together ..from middle to end..and I throughly enjoyed it ! I feel bad leaving a 4 star review..wish it could be four and a half stars!! I know how hard Authors work on their stories..some going on for YEARS !! In NO WAY will this deter me from reading anything else she writes...this is just "THIS" book my opinion is based on..and really..on the first few chapters ...in fact I have her "Paris Apartment " up next..that sounds OUTRAGEOUS...I still think she is a five star Author...this book hit me in a so-so kinda way. I guess everyone can't be five star perfect. I wouldn't say NOT to read it..It may be OUTRAGEOUS to someone else...I'm just giving you MY OPINION for the first few..chapters..which had me thinking..should I stick it out ?? BUT...Soo Glad I did !!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟
