Book Overview

The Little Prince Le Petit Prince], is a novella and the most famous work of the French aristocrat, writer, poet and pioneering aviator Antoine de Saint-Exup ry (1900-1944). The novella is both the most-read and most-translated book in the French language, and was voted the best book of the 20th century in France. After the outbreak of the Second World War Saint-Exup ry became exiled in North America. In the midst of personal upheavals and failing health, he produced almost half of the writings for which he would be remembered, including a tender tale of loneliness, friendship, love and loss, in the form of a young prince fallen to Earth. An earlier memoir by the author had recounted his aviation experiences in the Sahara Desert, and he is thought to have drawn on those same experiences in The Little Prince. Since its first publication in the United States, the novella has been adapted to numerous art forms and media, including audio recordings, radio plays, live stage, film screen, television, ballet, and operatic works.

The Little Prince is a poetic tale, with watercolour illustrations by the author, in which a pilot stranded in the desert meets a young prince fallen to Earth from a tiny asteroid. The story is philosophical and includes social criticism, remarking on the strangeness of the adult world. It was written during a period when Saint-Exup ry fled to North America subsequent to the Fall of France during the Second World War, witnessed first hand by the author and captured in his memoir Flight to Arras. The adult fable, according to one review, is actually "...an allegory of Saint-Exup ry's own life--his search for childhood certainties and interior peace, his mysticism, his belief in human courage and brotherhood.... but also an allusion to the tortured nature of their relationship."

Though ostensibly styled as a children's book, The Little Prince makes several observations about life and human nature. For example, Saint-Exup ry tells of a fox meeting the young prince during his travels on Earth. The story's essence is contained in the lines uttered by the fox to the little prince: On ne voit bien qu'avec le coeur. L'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux. ("One sees clearly only with the heart. What is essential is invisible to the eyes.") Other key thematic messages are articulated by the fox, such as: Tu deviens responsable pour toujours de ce que tu as apprivois . ("You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.") and C'est le temps que tu as perdu pour ta rose qui fait ta rose si importante. ("It is the time you have lost for your rose that makes your rose so important.") The fox's messages are arguably the book's most famous quotations because they deal with human relationships.

Been obsessed with the little prince since Netflix made the animated movie

Was delivered fairly quick. I bought an Acceptable copy and it was practically new despite one page having been folded at the corner. The 4 star rated comes from me remembering I ordered a hardcover copy and being sent a paperback. That could be my fault but mentioning it, regardless.

A Classically Charming Story!

I was introduced to this book a while back and fell in love with the story and how it was written! It's story for all ages! A charming book to have in your library!

amazing!

perfect for all ages.

A remarkable classic book you should read!

The Little Prince is subtly beautiful, a poetic legend by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. “What makes the desert beautiful is that somewhere it hides a well.” “But on your tiny planet, my little prince, all you need do is move your chair a few steps. You can see the day end and the twilight falling whenever you like..” “One day," you said to me, "I saw the sunset forty-four times!” “And a little later you added: "You know-- one loves the sunset, when one is so sad...” How amazing it is! The expressive writing carries both weight and sincerity. The subtle allegories make the reader realize the importance of living life to the fullest extent. “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye", The writing and storytelling was some of the best I’ve read in a children’s book in a long time and one of the books I remember from my childhood that I am still learning invaluable life lessons from. Such important lessons of great wisdom and knowledge in such a tiny book, from such a little prince. The Little Prince is one childhood book that everyone should recurring.

Beautiful story

The story and artwork is amazing. I got this to read to my toddler and I had thought it would have a few more pictures, so that was a disappointment, but it was worth it still. A story we both will cherish for years to come.

J'aime!

This book isn't only for children, adults need to read this. It's perfect for practicing your french and the quotes are beautiful.

This book is a life-long friend -- something new everytime!

My mom bought me this book when I was about 10 years old. I liked the pictures and the story captured my imagination. It seemed special, especially since my mom gave it to me. I read it again when I was about 16 and was blown away. I cried and cried. The insights I had gained between 10 and 16, I discovered, sat in the story, like little sparkling jewels half buried in sand.I read it again when I was about 22. Again, the depth of this little book surprised me, and again I was in tears. The last time I read it, I was about 25 and felt no less amazement than before at the spiraling depths of this simple story. (This book always makes me cry.)This is a book that grows with you. The story is enchanting and contains within its pages so many precious lessons, like little secrets -- keys to life -- revealed to the reader in stages, as the heart and mind grows and opens enough to perceive them. This book is a pure treasure, and I recommend it for everyone, young and old. I look forward to reading it again... and again... and again.

Timeless in any language

The Little Prince is timeless in any language and this particular translation managed to keep the beauty of St. Exupery's words and the little prince's charm.
