Our little family are avid children's books lovers. We easily have over 300 children's books-- everything from board books and picture books to adolescent encyclopedias and fairytales-- they overflow out of every book case, cabinet and nightstand. That said, this version of "The Little Red Hen" is easily in our top 10 Favorite. My kids are 6 and 2 now and we've had this copy for years. My 2-year-old now continues the tradition and asks for it by name "Witto Wed Hen, Mommy!" And yet my 6-year-old (normally fascinated by superheros and laserguns) still enjoys hearing it too. This book stands out because for the older kids in all of us, the writing is charming, the characters are interesting, and the repetition and rhythm of the words is fascinating for little ones, as well. As an illustrator myself, I just admire and appreciate the illustrations of Norman Messenger each time we open the book (which is pretty much daily for the past few months).
