The "Year of the Four Emperors" (AD 69) has no better historical account written than this old but excellent book. Wellesley covers the whole story in fascinating detail, including the many personalities, the character of Roman politics, the role of the Army and the Praetorian Guard, the savage revenge that the winners extracted from the defeated and the "collateral damage" of the political turmoil in Rome, caused by the rebellion of Batavians in Lower Germany. The only fault of the book are the poor maps which should be more numerous and more detailed, in order for the reader to follow the action easily without referring to other sources.
