Jane Chance's critical appraisal of J.R.R. Tokien's epic-romance trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, is the first to explore how power, politics and language interact in this heroic tale of the denizens of Middle-earth.
Jane Chance's critical work gives voice to many issues raised in Tolkein's Lord of the Rings that I had simply never considered before. I found that the book to be an extremely stimulating read. While the dedicated Tolkein fanatic (like myself) may find several small factual errors in Chance's text, these do not detract from the original perspectives offered therein. Indeed, Chance's analysis of "power" in the Lord of the Rings has enabled me to recognize elements in Tolkein's work that I had not known were there before, as well as in other works of literature. Bravo for the fresh voice.
