Born January 22, 1902, in Arizona Territory, John Woolf O'Connor ultimately became America's most popular outdoor writer. From his first magazine article in 1934, which he sold to Sports Afield for a whopping $12.50, and continuing until just a few weeks before his death in 1978, Jack O'Connor would write nine books on hunting and sporting firearms and more than 1,200 articles for Outdoor Life , Field & Stream , Redbook , True and Esquire . His longest and most treasured magazine association, however, was with Outdoor Life . The Lost Classics of Jack O'Connor features 40 of his best Outdoor Life articles, none of which have ever appeared in any other book. They range from O'Connor's hunts for Coues deer in his beloved desert Southwest to his pursuit of Dall sheep and grizzlies in the Yukon and lions and leopards in Africa.
I started reading O'Connor in the mid-70's, when he was still an active magazine writer. I have several of his books, at least one which has subsequently become a hard-to-find collector item. His somewhat acerbic style was appealing to me, and while his technical knowledge was vast, he was an advocate of keeping things simple. He had a knack for explaining a concept in a way that really sticks with you. This book shows a more personal side of O'Connor, which isn't present in most of his other writing. Even though I was pretty well versed, I still learned things about him and his family from these lesser known articles. A valuable addition to any JO'C library.

A must for all hunters. I rarely give a book 5 stars but this one deserves it. A collection of some 40 articles Jack wrote for Outdoor Life magazine, mostly big game hunting in North America, Africa and Asia. But there are also some bird hunting stories, an article on his beloved .270 caliber and a trout fishing story. This makes a great companion to Jack O'Connor's Big Game Hunts. Enjoy.
