Sometimes Kenya Davenport believes she was switched at the hospital--how else could a lover of anime, gaming, and cosplay come from STEM parents? Still, Kenya dreams of being able to turn her creative hobby into a career. She finally has a chance to make it big when she joins the reality show competition Cosplay or No Way. There's just one catch: the challenge for the final round is all about iconic pairs, and the judges want the contestants' significant others to participate. Unfortunately, Kenya is as single as can be at the moment. Luckily her best friend, Cameron Lassiter, agrees to be her fake boyfriend for the show. Roleplaying a couple in love will force them to explore what they're hiding under the mask of friendship. Can Kenya and Cam fake it until she makes it, or will she be real about her feelings, knowing it could cost her the best friend she's ever had?
I enjoyed this book having a full figured heroine appreciated, valued, and wanted by the male lead just as she is. I also liked that although Kenya was fully okay with herself she wasn't exempt from doubts from time to time that happen to all women who live in this time where body size very often matters more than character and personality. That being said, it was a very cute read that I enjoyed. I only wish that there had been a comeuppance or at least some kind of consequence for the bad guys Rachel and Jane and even Jessa who decided she was the better choice simply based on looks. Call me idealistic but I really like when ppl don't get away with abuse of power and bad behavior just because they feel entitled.
A cute cosplay rom com!

The Love Con is a cute rom com with a friends-to-lover trope (I'm usually more of a fan for enemy-to-lovers!). Kenya is a finalist in a cosplay competition and the final round requires her to enlist the help of her best friend (maybe more-than-friend best friend), Cam.
What I enjoyed: the characters were adorable and I loved how much Kenya and Cam supported / appreciated each other; Kenya's body positivity and confidence; highlighting the topic of microaggressions
What I didn't love as much: the cheesy dialogue, the use of "babe" (am I the only one who hates that), how tough Kenya's family was on her, the implausible way Kenya and Cam started sharing a bed (even though they had 2 bedrooms).
Thank you Berkley for my gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.
