"I hand her a note. Her eyes widen. Chelsea lives for this stuff. She whispers, 'What will you wear?' What will I wear? It wasn't exectly my first thought! Like, first of all, who wrote it? Who's in love with me?" Starting a new school year, buying her first bra, parents fighting, fathers leaving, mysterious love notes, and the new girl ruining her life - Alyssa has a lot on her mind. With humor and charm, Debora Allie makes her debut in this story of love and friendship in the sixth grade.
I am a fifth grade teacher and this is the second year that our school guidance counselor and I are using this book for a discussion group. Last year, we chose girls who were struggling with social issues. They suggested that all of the 5th grade girls should read the book. So we are doing just that-class by class. This book is very meaningful for girls struggling with new and often bewildering issues characteristic of their age and development. We highly recommend it!

Popular and a good student, sixth-grader Alyssa thought she had life all figured out. Then along comes stuff that tests her, like falling for her English teacher, trying to guess why best friend Chelsea is being so weird and what's up with her girls club. The worst, though, is the new girl in town who seems to be usurping Chelsea's attention, who delights in tormenting Alyssa for no reason she can see and whom Alyssa is convinced played a nasty prank on her. All sorts of struggles come to Alyssa's fore, including a startling revelation about her dad and the thought that maybe she, not the new girl, is becoming the meanest girl around. The ending is happy and satisfying, though some plot lines are tied up too quickly. Allie has a keen grasp on real kids' speech and behavior, and preteen girls should eat this up.
