Shlomo Vinner is an Israeli published poet, professor of mathematics, and violinist. He has a long history of association with poets in Israel and the United States. This is not the first of his books to be published in translation. Though he himself knows English well, he counted on long-time friends in the U.S. and Israel to translate his work. These poems are Israeli in particular, dealing with Israel's history in modern times, with Biblical associations the conditions of life and Vinner's observations, love, struggles, and in this way the particular becomes universal. Vinner has an acute awareness of the shape and nuances of what he brings into the sphere of his poems. The poems, the poetics, are lovely, a pleasure to read and contemplate.
