The Miser (French: L'Avare) is a five-act comedy in prose by the French playwright Moli re. It was first performed on September 9, 1668, in the theatre of the Palais-Royal in Paris. The miser of the title is called Harpagon, a name adapted from the Latin harpago, meaning a hook or grappling iron. He is obsessed with the wealth he has amassed and always ready to save expenses. Now a widower, he has a son, Cl ante, and a daughter, lise. Although he is over seventy, he is attempting to arrange a marriage between himself and an attractive young woman, Mariane. She and Cl ante are already devoted to each other, however, and the son attempts to procure a loan to help her and her sick mother, who are impoverished. lise, Harpagon's daughter, is the beloved of Val re, but her father hopes to marry her to a wealthy man of his choosing, Seigneur Anselme. Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, known by his stage name Moli re (1622-1673), was a French playwright and actor who is considered to be one of the greatest masters of comedy in Western literature. Among Moli re's best-known works are The Misanthrope, The School for Wives, Tartuffe, The Miser, The Imaginary Invalid, and The Bourgeois Gentleman.
I loved this book. As I was reading it, I could see the actors performing the play in my head. The caracters were so true. Espacially Harpagon. The greedy old man who only thinks about himself you want to hit at times. Especially when he speaks the last line of the play. I recommend this book to anyone who loves classic litterature, humour and theatre and if you understand french, of course.

I loved l'avare. I am french and I read it for my french class. I loved the way it was written. As I was reading it, I could see the actors portraying the roles of Harpagon amongst others in my head. I loved the humour and the wit included in the play. I loved this book and I would recommend it to everybody who loves a good classic. The only problem I had was with the language. Sometimes it was hard to understand because it was written in old french but definitions were included. If you love classic litterature, humour and theatre, get this book. :-) Jacques Arsenault
