But by death and the finite time which leads up to it, God has shown man that his turning-away is far more serious than he thought, so grave that of himself he cannot make it good."

The most profound meditation on life and death I've ever read. I recommend it for theologians (especially those who don't understand von Speyr's influence on Balthasar) or anyone willing to follow life's most fundamental questions to their source.
