Sarah Hawthorne had no idea her life was going to change when she took a seasonal job working on Nantucket. A gifted painter, Sarah was devoted to her art-until she met John Jarad, a handsome, local police lieutenant.John is deeply rooted in the charming island home his family helped to settle. As Sarah explores John's family history, she reactivates interest in his younger brother's cold case disappearance. A great-uncle's surprising bequest brings family tensions to the surface, and the sudden reappearance of the missing brother shakes the Jarad family tree. A string of mysterious deaths ensue as John and Sarah forge their investigative talents to solve a sinister island conspiracy.Packed with engaging characters, and offering a roller-coaster plot, THE NATURE OF THE GRAVE promises to be the perfect summer beach read.
Martha Reed's quirky characters and sense of place make "Nature of the Grave" come alive. Fast-paced but careful plotting kept me reading through all 388 pages at one sitting. It's been a long time since a book has so captivated me! Can't wait for Reed's next novel!
Martha Reed is a gifted writer.

I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed it so much, in fact, that I found I made a mistake by starting to read it too late in the day one Sunday. So I was up all night reading it because I couldn't put it down until I read it through. Whatever you do, start it early in the day so you don't lose too much sleep when you discover you just have to read it cover to cover. It's a very engaging story with wonderful characters in an interesting setting. I'm looking forward to Ms Reed's next book!
A Review of Martha Reed's New Book

From the beginning of this novel, you are drawn into a story that accelerates. "Nature of the Grave" is a good opening story for a mystery series. There is enough character development to build the reader's empathy, but there is room for more in the upcoming novel(s). Ms. Reed's power of description paints a picture of Nantucket island during a season that not many see. Her narrative describing the characters' backgrounds are very believable. If you have spent any time on the Islands, you will be able see these fellows in your imagination just a surely as you see them on the ferry! Can't wait for the next John and Sarah Jarad mystery from Martha Reed!
