Book Overview

InCodependent No More,Melody Beattie introduced the world to the termcodependency. Now a modern classic, this book established Beattie as a pioneer in self-help literature and endeared her to millions of readers who longed for healthier relationships. Twenty-five years later concepts such as self-care and setting boundaries have become entrenched in mainstream culture. Now Beattie has written a followup volume,The New Codependency, which clears up misconceptions about codependency, identifies how codependent behavior has changed, and provides a new generation with a road map to wellness. The question remains: What is and what is not codependency? Beattie here reminds us that much of codependency is normal behavior. It's about crossing lines. There are times we do too much, care too much, feel too little, or overly engage. Feeling resentment after giving is not the same as heartfelt generosity. Narcissism and self-love, enabling and nurturing, and controlling and setting boundaries are not interchangeable terms. InThe New Codependency,Beattie explores these differences, effectively invoking her own inspiring story and those of others, to empower us to step out of the victim role forever. Codependency, she shows, is not an illness but rather a series of behaviors that once broken down and analyzed can be successfully combated. Each section offers an overview of and a series of activities pertaining to a particular behavior -- caretaking, controlling, manipulation, denial, repression, etc. -- enabling us to personalize our own step-bystep guide to wellness. These sections, in conjunction with a series of tests allowing us to assess the level of our codependent behavior, demonstrate that while it may not seem possible now, we have the power to take care of ourselves, no matter what we are experiencing.Punctuated with Beattie's renowned candor and intuitive wisdom,The New Codependencyis an owner's manual to learning to be who we are and gives us the tools necessary to reclaim our lives by renouncing unhealthy practices.

Good book.

This book was helpful! Read this instead of Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No...by John Townsend and Henry Cloud. I did like Codependent No More more than this book. I liked this book alot more than Boundaries this book was a much easier read and had better advice in my opinion. If you are in an abusive relationship or recovering from one I would also recommend: -10 Lifesaving Principles for Women in Difficult Marriages by Karla Downing -Why does he do that? By Lundy Bancroft -The Verbally abusive relationship By Patricia Evans -Not to People Like Us By Susan Weitzman -The Dance of Anger by Harriet Lerner -Love, Honor and Negotiate by Betty Carter

Very Helpful book for the codependency issues that keep lingering after many books

After reading Women Who Love too Much, Codependent No More, Beyond Codependency, I still felt had unsolved issues and unanswered questions. This book answered them all! My realization of its success was after months when I realized its positive super effect on me. I watched my gradual behaviour change which made me a happier person. The friends who I passed this book over also feel relieved about their unsolved and leftout issues after reading it. I advise it to everyone who feel they need to read a bit more about Codependency...

Excellent!

Even if you've read her first books on codependency, visit this one. It's up to date, highly informative, helpful, and encouraging! Highly recommended!

Beattie at her best

This is a mature writer's book and an essential guide to better relationships with others and better care for oneself.

another great book in the series on co-dependency

Melody Beattie writes very practical, useful books that are so helpful to those dealing with this topic. The mixture of personal stories, questions to ponder and content to think about is wonderful and has never disappointed me.

The New Codependency

This newest edition of Beatie's is easy to understand and very helpful. I especially enjoyed the section on assessments in order to better understand behaviors.
