Anyone who buys this book expecting a big kid-sleuth-stumbling-on-murder-conspiracy story is going to be very disappointed. This is a psychological drama about an adolescent dealing with the death of his mother, and though there is an "investigation," it's only a game the kid gets involved in, not a real murder mystery. That being said, there's a lot of great writing and humor in this book. The main character's relationships with his friends and family are especially fascinating, and Ms. Haber does a great job of showing us how grief can short-circuit those relationships. In fact, that's the true value of this book: showing young readers how grief, unacknowledged, poisons everything, including love, and isolates the griever. Ms. Haber has written a very original and moving book. Read it for its warmth and wit and insight. But don't expect spies, kidnappings, or chase scenes.
