A collection of "stories of Downeast Maine" by native Maine writer Sanford Phippen, whose stories have been praised for hilarity and poignance in equal measure and whose characters are splendidly... This description may be from another edition of this product.
If you are "from away", or a "city boy" or "city girl", this might not be as humourous as it is to those of us who have grown up in small towns in Maine, and in other parts of Northern New England. Sandy Phippen shows us the small town reality of coastal Maine, and stretches the truth just enough to make excellent fiction. In the story about the grass fire, I could just see the volunteer fire department from my hometown doing the same things, all the neighbors showing up to see the action, etc. Phippen's characters are combinations of many people I have known and loved, and several I have downright hated. This is a far cry from idealized country tranquility that is often provided in images of Maine. A recent(excellent) review of Sandy Phippen's new book, Kitchen Boy, in the Boston Globe described the voice, the outlook of Phippen in a truthful way. Having been a Kitchen Girl on the Maine coast in the summer, I can't wait to read this one!
