His father had a stroke at the beginning of summer vacation and Mac has to spend the summer with his Aunt Holly and Uncle John in rural Missouri where he meets Dory Grace. Mac has never met anyone like Dory who one-minute talks of dying and the next minute talks about her "magic". He is drawn to the enigmatic Dory who whimsically appears to sneak in and out of his life. She is the opposite of her stepbrother, Tony who has power over Dory and he will do anything, including murder, to keep Dory under his control. Although warned by his aunt and uncle to stay away from Dory, Mac is drawn even closer to Dory. Tony follows them and punishes Dotry for her disobedience. Mac faces a maelstrom of psychological fear and uncertainty that leads to a most startling and frightening conclusion.
