I was truly impressed with this collection of tales. Nesbit is a gifted storyteller and her tales are subtle, not simple, packing a 'chilling' punch. Again, I was truly impressed. The majority of the tales take place in England and have some elements of Poe, some of M.R. James. Nesbit goes back and forth between male and female narrators and the third-person perspective. To some extent, the tales look forward to H.P. Lovecraft ('The Three Drugs' especially and 'The Five Senses' - which also has a bit of Poe). There is a Gothic feel but a fine balance between narration and setting the mood. I think this is something to read, to appreciate, to explore. Each tale is satisfying and perfect if you need something to read while on the go (the majority of stories are ten-twelve pages in length). I'm not familiar with Nesbit's children's novels. I plan on reading them next. But if you like Nesbit or like a good story that is well-written, please pick up this book. It's nice to find something unexpected. And this was unexpected for me.
