Innocent young Candida is almost destitute after the death of her beloved father. Resolving to keep up the family's modest Elizabethan manor house in Hertfordshire and support Ned, the family's... This description may be from another edition of this product.
This is one of my favorite BC books! This novel has it all: good story, credible characters and situations, and explosion of jealousy as I've never read again in any of her books, and the perfect ending. A very romantic novel that will leave you with a sweet feeling in your chest as you turn the last page over. Here is the synopsis: "When her father dies, beautiful Candida Walcott, left penniless, knows she will have to sell the one thing she loves most in the world--her black stallion, Pegasus. But, as luck has it, Major Hooper, the London stable-owner who buys Pegasus, is equally enchanted by Candida and offers her a job in his riding school. Thrilled that she will be near Pegasus, and unaware of Major Hooper's hidden motives, Candida allows herself to be lured into the world of the Pretty Horse-Breakers. There she moves innocently in the circles of high-paid mistresses and procurers, unaware that she is considered one of them. When Candida falls in love with handsome Lord Manville, known as "the Heart-Breaker," her real troubles begin ..." I must say, most of the raging parts in BC novels are very predictable, meaning the heroine actually does something that lead our gentleman in love to believe she is as fast as any other gaiety girl. But here the situation is totally and completely unfair! She is raged at in the most insulting way when she had been kidnaped against her will... Here is one fragment of the raging scene: "Curse you, I almost fell for it! I was very nearly caught by the oldest confidence trick in the world! Well, I have learn my lesson, you can make sure of that. Now you can go, get out and stay out! And tell you paramour I want none of his leavings, I will not soil my hands by touching anything that he has already fouled beyond description. Go, and God damn you! I hope that I never see you again!"
