I like the metaphor the author uses--comparing a vibrant prayer life to jazz artistry. Moore argues that the only way we can "improvise" in prayer is by knowing the foundational elements of a good prayer life, just as a jazz player can improvise on the melody only when he or she had learned the foundational elements of the music. Most of the book is devoted to a personal prayer liturgy--a 40 day journey to acquiring the building blocks of prayer that are so often absent from our extemporaneous praying. This is a helpful, thoughtful read.
