'The path, Mr Hare, is alive. It controls your destiny. The only way to beat it is to solve the peffa-ancient riddle of Treffelpugga Path...' When Matlock the Hare's beloved home of Winchett Dale is... This description may be from another edition of this product.
I had bought several oracle decks for Matlock's world by Jacqui and Phil, and so I was expecting a gentle, fun escapism. While some of that applies, that is not this book.
The Riddle of Trefflepugga Path has some darker elements to it I was not anticipating. No, it didn't turn me off from it, but it did catch me off guard at times.
The characters are great. I laughed out loud at some humorous sections. I connected with some of the characters, which is vital for me to like a book.
Some people will be put off by the lingo. Jacqui and Phil made up their own words for quite a lot. And it isn't just in the characters' dialogue--it's in the narration as well. There is a glossary and a quick cheat sheet. I did find as I got deeper into the book that I didn't need to check. Either I'd learned what a word meant or the context of the way it was being used made the meaning clear. Someone else described it best to me: The authors' intent was to have you get out of that small box, 'adult' mind and let things get shaken up a bit. This book does that with the way it is presented.
My one real beef is how long certain conversations can take between characters. It's often a very slow-moving book, so I didn't finish it in one or two sittings. That being said, when I got to the end, I was wanting to know more. So I immediately ordered book two.
