Woodroffe's Second Earth is a very different retelling of Genesis, a poetic story of the rise and fall and rebirth of the human race. The prose has a mystical and philosophical flavor appropriate to the subject, but with poetically beautiful language. Every page has at least one painting, often two or three, and the paintings range from peacefully pretty landscapes thronged with alien animals to Boschian nightmares or war and devastation. Everything in the book is very beautiful, and everything in the book is very strange. The book has strongly religious overtones but bears no resemblance to any real religion. If that description appeals to you, then the Second Earth is the best rendition of it you're likely to find. If not, you'll find the book weird, creepy, and maybe offensive, but at least it will still be pretty. Also, the book is very, very out of print and getting harder and harder to obtain.

A fantastic collection of the artists work compiled into a retelling of the pentateuch (the first five books of The Bible). Lushly illistrated in Woodroffe's unique style. Don't let the biblical angle throw you; fundamentalists may not enjoy this (anymore than they might enjoy, say, Last Temptation (Scorsese)).
