Guru Nanak spontaneously composed the Aarti, as it'd been revealed to him during his visit to the famed Jagannath Temple of Puri (Odisha). Guru Nanak Dev has imagined the entire cosmos decorated as a prayer platter on the altar of the almighty. He uttered only the first stanza of the Aarti, the remaining parts having been composed by Bhagats Ravidas, Saini, Kabir, and Dhanna. Guru Gobind Singh composed the concluding part. The Aarti is sung collectively by devout Sikhs in the evening hours after Rehiras Sohila. The Aarti was composed in Raga Dhanashri.
