Book Overview

In this magical debut, a couple's lives are changed forever by the arrival of a little girl, wild and secretive, on their snowy doorstep.

Alaska, 1920: a brutal place to homestead, and especially tough for recent arrivals Jack and Mabel. Childless, they are drifting apart -- he breaking under the weight of the work of the farm; she crumbling from loneliness and despair. In a moment of levity during the season's first snowfall, they build a child out of snow. The next morning the snow child is gone -- but they glimpse a young, blonde-haired girl running through the trees.

This little girl, who calls herself Faina, seems to be a child of the woods. She hunts with a red fox at her side, skims lightly across the snow, and somehow survives alone in the Alaskan wilderness. As Jack and Mabel struggle to understand this child who could have stepped from the pages of a fairy tale, they come to love her as their own daughter. But in this beautiful, violent place things are rarely as they appear, and what they eventually learn about Faina will transform all of them.

Adult folk story

It seemed the description was meant to make the reader perceive it as a modern take away from a folk story. The book led as a folk story and never strayed far from that. If it were meant to head into any modern direction it never did. I’m happy to know some enjoyed it but I found it a lot of build up for something that dragged out and is outdated. The writing was plain. If there were more novel-esque features like deep descriptions that wrapped you up into a setting, I could understand and appreciate the folk story. Alas, it was more of a children’s book. This is a very personal opinion but I was not a fan at all.

Appropriate ending.

The book was an incredibly interesting story with a very long, build up to a romantic encounter. Ending did leave me wine a little bit more however, I do feel that it was the right ending for the story.

Beautiful

Very interesting, unique story line. Characters are well developed. I really enjoyed the setting. Highly recommend.

Beautiful, fantastical, mysterious

I thought this book was beautifully done. The character development is satisfying and realistic, the mystery surrounding the Snow Child is intriguing, and the overall experience of the book was so enjoyable. I would highly recommend it. P.S. Great book for a discussion group!

Unique But Slow

I enjoyed this book but it was extremely slow and I felt it lacked a true climax. The ending was satisfying though. The story was unique and the plot held a few twists. I liked the time period it was set in and I did enjoy the characters.
