Sometimes, when you're sixteen, your concerns don't go beyond the parameters of your immediate world. It's 1931 in Jefferson, Iowa, and what's important to Jim Snow are the flavors served in the local ice-cream parlor, the location of the apostrophe key on his typewriter, and the girl he loves. But the ties of family bind him in a way that's beyond his control, shaping not only his life but the lives of future Snows.Jim, Cathy, Jill, and Mona Snow all come of age in different eras (1931, 1942, 1969, 2006), but for each of them, sixteen is a departure point-a time when they become aware of the complications that will alter the course of their lives.
If you enjoy multi-generational stories, you'll love "The Snows". Ms. Moranville examines the Snow family from the perspective of four family members, each beginning at age 16, over a span of more than seventy years. Ms. Moranville creates a moving portrait of life in a small town that shapes the character of four young Iowans. Highly recommend

The Snows is an amazing book that takes the reader from the Depression era to modern times. Each time period is narrated by a different member of the Snow's family and I loved them all. Jim is so kind, Cathy's story is heart-breaking, Jill is brave, and Mona makes the reader appreciate how a family's history shapes a person's life. This is one of those rare books that will appeal to teenagers and adults. This is a perfect choice for a book club!

THE SNOWS is a wonderfully crafted story that carries the reader through four generations of the Snows family. From the first page, I was drawn to the character of Jim and the powerful relationship he shares with his younger sister, Cathy. Sharelle Byars Moranville's masterful writing swept me along as the Snows travel from the Great Depression to World War II, through the Kent State riots, and to the present time. This book is appropriate for teen and adult readers. If you haven't read it, you're missing an amazing saga.
