Having visited the Philippines a number of times, I was familiar with some aspects of Nimmo's work. The Sulu region, however, had already undergone the catastrophic change he describes. It was rewarding, therefore, to learn of his experiences in the closing years of a centuries-old culture. As one who does not often read esoteric journals, I found it fortunate that he rendered this work in the fiction mode. While the stories are obviously based on real experiences, Nimmo was free to distill reality from academic jargon and share with us people who are hauntingly human, not merely distant subjects.
