Book Overview

[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Sound of Laughing Rabbits" by Alex Raffi.]

On the surface, Alex Raffi's The Sound of Laughing Rabbits tells a fantastical tale of adventure for children. We follow the young Richard as he sails the seas searching for a mythical land called Utopia and meets new crew members along the way, including Lorelei, a mysterious girl who always wears a rabbit mask. The book is about much more, however. It's about life, about the choices we make, and about the way we view the world as each of us navigates our surroundings in the aimless quest for meaning and happiness. We all want to reach Utopia, which makes the book's lessons universally valuable.

Raffi describes the book as a way to share the sense of wonder from his childhood, looking beyond mundane details to reveal a rich universe of insights and possibilities. He achieves this through gorgeous illustrations that range from whimsical to stunning, imaginative allegories, and delightful descriptions. The following passage highlights his ability to inject beauty into small things and craft simple but engaging paragraphs as he portrays the arrival of snow through a single snowflake: "At that moment, a wisp of vapor became a tiny droplet. A speck born into the world nestled in a beam of sunlight. Color refracted through its body as the sky cheered and sang, celebrating the arrival of this silver rascal, resting in its pleasures" (page 45).

The book is a bridge between picture books and young adult novels, thanks to its more sophisticated writing and mature themes. As mentioned earlier, the story tackles many relatable and fundamental aspects of life: most characters seek self-actualization, even if they don't realize it, and some struggle with feelings of regret and inadequacy. The sea acts as a metaphor for life, allowing the author to present personal conflicts and philosophical discussions in an engaging setting. These features make the book a perfect fit for classrooms, encouraging debate and introspection.

The Sound of Laughing Rabbits is a surprisingly deep book filled with both personal growth and adventure, featuring a colorful cast of characters with relatable life journeys.. Thus, my final rating is 4 out of 4 stars. The book is particularly suitable for preadolescents due to its somewhat challenging language and themes, but younger readers can still enjoy the story, though they might require assistance.
