First a pack of vile, smelly goblins snatch Simon. Then a band of elves try to entrap Jared. Why is the entire faerie world so eager to get their hands on Spiderwick's Guide? And will the Grace kids be left alone, now that the Guide has mysteriously disappeared? Don't count on it. At school, someone is running around pretending to be Jared, and it's not Simon. To make matters even worse, now Mallory has disappeared and something foul in the water is killing off all the plants and animals for miles around. Clues point to the old abandoned quarry, just outside of town. Dwarves have taken over an abandoned mine there. And the faerie world's abuzz with the news that a creature with plans to rule the world has offered them a gift to join with him -- he's given them a queen...

This volume is almost a Snow White story, except here the girl's twin brothers are her rescuers and the dwarves are the villians. I especially enjoyed this book, because being female, I like to see strong female characters presented for young readers. I also like seeing children come to appreciate their sibbling's abilities and value. The book also devels however lightly with the issue of growing up and with not wanting to compete with someone you like. The plot is very active--not that the others weren't. It carries the reader through the adventure and sets up the tension for the final volume, making it very evident that they are all of a whole fabric. Again, the book is very nicely bound, the illustrations are very nice, and the price is reasonable enough that it may be easily added to a child's own library.
The Ironwood Tree (Book 4)

Mallory, Jared, and Simon are back in the fourth installment of "The Spiderwick Chronicles". Things aren't as they seem when the children are at school, watching Mallory in her fencing competition. In this book, they encounter: a new shape-shifter (or is it?), another kidnapping, a world of "metal", and some little people who want the same thing that everyone ELSE wants - The Field Guide. This book is building up to the climax "The Wrath Of Mulgarath". I think, all in all, this book ended at a very good spot, because it leaves off RIGHT where the 5th book begins (I've started reading book 5 already). So, take my word for it - the story continues with NO extended time inbetween. The illustrations are really great in this fourth book. I loved the pictures of all the "metal" world in the Quarry. Very imaginative. This book doesn't take long to read (like the others), but goes at just the right pace to keep you turning the pages. I actually read this in one day (not at one sitting though). I think this series is great for anybody who wants to take a trip away from reality. I'm 27, and I really enjoyed this series, and I've recommended it to my friends as well. Take a chance, and read these books!
Great Adventure--- Review by Ramsie

If you like adventure then this book would be really interesting. These three kids, Malory,Jared & Simon, always go on adventures because everyone wants the guide. The guide is a book that tells you everything you need to know about dwarfs, fairys, goblins etc... Spiderwick is a great adventure. I hope they come out with the fifth and sixth book.

Leading up to an exciting ending

This is an excellent book that is leading up to an exciting last book. I'm looking forward to the ending. It's nice to see what lengths the boys will go to to save their sister, even if it means Jared getting in worse trouble with his mother (which he only got into in the first place trying to stop someone from stealing from Mallory). Excellent book!
