The Alamo in San Antonio, Texas is one of the greatest symbols of American and human military lore. Like many of the great and remembered battles, it was one where a small number of fighters held out against enormous odds. Some of the men who died there have names that were already legendary, men such as Davy Crockett and James Bowie. This book is the story of that epic event, a battle that was won, even though it was lost. By holding out as long as they did and providing the rallying point for the people of the Mexican state of Texas, the men at the Alamo made the independence of Texas possible. Richards does an excellent job is describing this momentous event as well as providing the appropriate context as to why the battle was fought. That is certainly necessary, wars and battles do not arise spontaneously, there is always a sequence of events that leads to the hostilities.
