HARRY EDWARDS calls his autobiography a "sports story." And so it is. But it is also much more than that, for Edwards has done more than anyone to expose and analyze what he calls "the great American... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Dr. Edwards is brilliant, starting with the title, he demonstrates understanding of the complexities of human relationships and race relations. His account of how the black student is used by the educational system is chilling, and his survival story is inspiring. He is a champion of "overcomers," and has a highly intelligent view on revolution. This book, and his lectures, has changed the way I view American history, American institutions, and the struggle of the African-American man.
Dr. Edwards' thoughtful opus

dr. edwards is a highly thoughtful individual. the media likes to mis-state his words and actions, which is unfortunate. this book gives great insight into how he learned how to learn and how his thinking has evolved (at least until the time of publication...don't worry though, he continues to think about the difficult problems of race and youth development). if nothing else, dr. edwards gives a wonderful description of this former teachers, the ones who made learning "not necessarily fun, but enjoyable".
THE STRUGGLE THAT WILL "ALWAYS" BE...
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 24 years ago
Dr. Edwards does an excellent job at capturing our society at that point in time. It is as if you are walking right along with him when you are reading of his struggle. This book transcends socio-economics, race, color and creed. In essence one does not have to be African-American or male to purely understand this book-one simply needs to feel what it is like to persevere. Then and only then will one truly understand the very essence of "the struggle that must be." Marcus Garvey stated it best when he said "without struggle, there is no progress". Thus, if you are struggling through something...anything, for that matter, that struggle MUST occur so that your progress can actually BE.
