This book was assigned in my Constitutional History class in law school. I found it to be extremely helpful. Though it was concise (only 100 pages or so) it was very thorough and provided a great overview of the social landscape of the country during the Marshall and Taney years on the Court. Newmeyer does a good job of condensing important cases to their most crucial elements and relating them to the political and social battles of the time.
