The Time of My Lives: A Memoir

In this memoir, A. J. Sherman narrates a life acutely conscious of being a triple outsider: foreign-born, Jewish and homosexual. A historian, he moved with ease through the worlds of investment banking, social work, academe, Jungians, Jewish organizations, publishing, philanthropy, classical music and more. His memoir is filled with engaging accounts of his relationships including such world-historical figures as Isaiah Berlin and members of the Rothschild and Warburg families. A master story-teller, he brings to life leaders in every field he touched, as well as many colorful figures - rabbis, psychoanalysts, doctors, bankers and musicians. Born in 1934 in Jerusalem and raised on the Upper West Side of Manhattan under the shadow of WWII and the Cold War, Sherman spoke six languages and early on acquired the ability to adapt, chameleon-like, to his surroundings, mastering the arts of discretion and penetrating observation. In reading his life, which spans the second half of the 20th century, we get a picture of the history of that time in American and European culture.
